Executive Diploma in Cardiac Nutrition

The Executive Diploma in Cardiac Nutrition will help students to develop their skills to understand how these cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) can be prevented in individuals and populations through lifestyle and dietary modifications.

Cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of death globally, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives each year. CVDs are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels and include coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, rheumatic heart disease and other conditions. Four out of 5CVD deaths are due to heart attacks and strokes, and one third of these deaths occur prematurely in people under 70 years of age. Cardiovascular diseases have now become the leading cause of mortality in India. A quarter of all mortality is attributable to CVD. Ischemic heart disease and stroke are the predominant causes and are responsible for >80% of CVD deaths.

Individuals at risk of CVD may demonstrate raised blood pressure, glucose, and lipids as well as overweight and obesity. These can all be easily measured in primary care facilities. Identifying those at highest risk of CVDs and ensuring they receive appropriate treatment can prevent premature deaths. Access to essential noncommunicable disease medicines and basic health technologies in all primary health care facilities is essential to ensure that those in need receive treatment and nutrition counselling. Lifestyle factors, including nutrition, play an important role in the causation of cardiovascular diseases. Nutrition plays an important role in the management of cardiac diseases. Nutrition therapy can modulate cardiac disease in many ways; either by slowing the progression, minimizing the number of drugs required, improving quality of life, or, in some cases helping cure the disease. There is a huge potential for nutrition therapy as an important adjunct to medical therapy in patients with cardiac disease.

In order to enhance core skills and competencies of health professionals to effectively educate people with heart health, to promote healthy lifestyles and effective self-management for optimal prevention of CVDs, Centre of Nutrition and Dietetics Studies (CNDS), IGMPI has designed this programme. This is undertaken through theoretical knowledge and equip the learners with interpersonal communication skills, this will facilitate psychological wellbeing of patients.

The objective of this course is to enhance your knowledge on all aspects of the nutritional approaches for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease., provide an understanding of the causes leading to CVDs, to provide nutrition therapy for dyslipidemia that is an important risk factor for cardiac diseases, learn the nutritional management of hypertension, which is another major condition in the community and a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

On completion of this course student will be able to learn how these diseases impact populations worldwide and how they can be prevented. By the end of this course, students will understand the principles underlying the use of nutrition therapy in the prevention and management of cardiac diseases. You will be able to educate a patient on the role of nutrition, physical activity and exercise in the prevention and management of CVDs.

This course opens new avenues of specialization for allied health professionals and would offer better work opportunities in the field. It will enable an individual to avail of jobs at government, community and private hospitals, community and private clinics, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical companies as a nutrition counsellor for cardiac health.
