Research@IGMPI

IGMPI is an institution that is continuously involved in upgrading the human resources for a better contribution in their respective fields and seeks to expand human knowledge through analysis, innovation, and insight. IGMPI was founded to develop a deeper understanding of the importance of food safety and quality and their applications while integrating science and technology. Within the institution there are a plenty of research opportunities available for graduates, post graduates and even working professionals. With a team of highly experienced faculty, projects are given such that it helps the researcher to gain maximum knowledge and experience. The range of work being conducted is broad and deep. The institute has focused its work in developing products with enhanced nutrition, discovering innovative products utilizing byproducts, and implementing new methods to improve quality of food. The topics of research are designed keeping in mind the current requirement of food industries and consumers. All the work is conducted with full time faculty involvement and a constant research is done to achieve the best.

Currently, several researcher, graduates and postgraduate students from renowned universities of country are carrying out their dissertation projects in the field of food science. The projects are mainly in bakery science, dairy, new product development, microbiology and various changes in the food during processing. All the work is performed in such a way that it can have significance in the field of research. Research is being conducted on development of products as well as to measure the benefits and cost. The institute has well established labs with different required equipments and machineries to cope up with intensity of research being performed such as HPLC, GLC, cooling centrifuge, deep freezer, incubators for shelf life study, multiple Soxhlet extraction units etc. There are numerous other opportunities for researchers to conduct research during the summer break or academic year. Under these internships and projects they will be introduced with the real life corporate scenario. The study will cover all the minute details of the topic and will consider possibilities to help students achieve maximum knowledge and hands on experience.

In the last batch of our dissertation program, 14 students of B. Tech. and M. Sc., from Biotechnology, Food Technology and Food Science & Nutrition background from premier Universities have successfully completed their project/dissertation work in the area of Bakery, Fruits & Vegetable processing, new Product Development and related areas.

Ph. D Research Programmes

Introduction to the course

Ph.D is a research degree courses based on the thesis work. Doctor of Philosophy is a high level of recognized and authorative degree programme. Ph. D is not only to get higher level jobs with severe roles and responsibilities with high peak salary but also gives you a status of Doctorate. Ph.D is one of the most reputed and high demanded degree programmes usually enroll by the students who need deep exercises on dissertation. Subjects, the mode of thesis, research area all are depend upon student's past academic records.

Course Objective

Just similar to MS by research, here too students can choose courses in first two semesters on the basis of their interest and past master subjects. After passing with knowledge and learning test as a part of entrance exam by the students, can carry with dissertation program with research and testing program. With this test, students are examined whether they are in position to get with these research programmes or not. After knowledge test, each candidate is handed over with respective study material and courses curriculum and also appoint a supervisor by the university that assist their students on varied stages of Phd courses.

Course Work

The course work is compulsory and will carry 20 credits.

The bifurcation of these credits shall be as under:

1. 5 credits for Research Methodology which includes quantitative methods, computer applications, tools and techniques including instrumentation, communication skills and review of published research.
2. 10 credits for subject specific (2 subjects) course work in thrust areas of research.
3. 5 credits for field work, seminars and other academic activities.

Candidates holding M. Phil degree from a recognized University and who were admitted to M.Phil through an entrance examination and had also successfully completed course work at M.Phil level may be exempted from the course work.

Eligibility Criterion


. Masters Degree from any Recognized University or Institution thereto in a relevant subject with minimum 55% marks or an equivalent grade.
. For candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy layer)/ Differently-Abled and such other categories, relaxation as per the decision of the UGC & Govt. of India will be accorded.
. Candidates who have already passed UGC (JRF) Examinations/ NET/ SET/ SELT or have M. Phil degree can directly appear for interview.

Programme length:

1. Ph.D. programme shall be for a minimum duration of three years, including course work and a maximum of six years.
2. Extension beyond the above limits will be governed by the relevant clauses as stipulated in the Statute/Ordinance of the individual Institution concerned.
3. The women candidates and Persons with Disability (more than 40% disability) may be allowed a relaxation of two years for Ph.D. in the maximum duration. In addition, the women candidates may be provided.

Procedure for Admission

A candidate will be eligible for admission only after she/he qualifies an Entrance Examination.

If he/she qualifies as per above conditions and is desirous of pursuing Ph.D. degree, will have to appear in the interview by the Committee constituted for the purpose. All such candidates will apply and register for interview.

The final merit list will be drawn on the basis of combined performance in written examination and interview.

Successful candidates can pursue research either Full-time or Part-time.

Ordinarily, candidates offered a fellowship by the University or any other agency will have to pursue research degree programme on a full-time basis. However, candidates employed in an organisation may be permitted to register as Part-time students. Moreover, they shall work and be present at the Campus as and when needed for the purpose of their research.

Admission/Registration after the interview

A candidate declared as successful shall be required to apply to the Registrar in the prescribed Application Form and the candidate shall be given provisional admission/registration letter as per University Norms and Conditions. A candidate who has been offered registration shall be required to deposit the prescribed programmed fee at the time registration.

The applicant shall submit five copies of his/her Ph. D proposal as per the Guidelines along with the application. The date of the Research proposal acceptance shall be treated as the date of provisional Registration of the candidate and the candidate shall be given provisional admission/registration letter as per University Norms and Conditions. The registration shall be valid for three years.

Examination and Certification

An evaluation is scheduled at the end of course after the submission of the thesis. The candidates who qualify viva voce and Defense of thesis will be awarded Ph. D Degree from UGC approved University.
