Post Graduate Diploma in Renal Nutrition

The Post Graduate Diploma in Renal Nutrition will help students to develop their skills to understand nutritional challenges seen in kidney diseases and their management in individuals.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is emerging noncommunicable disease globally and most commonly occurring non-communicable diseases in India with a prevalence rate of 3- 4%. In India, given its population >1 billion, the rising incidence of CKD is likely to pose major problems for both healthcare and the economy in future years. Management of the nutritional aspects of CKD is associated with numerous challenges. Malnutrition is a common problem in patients with CKD, especially in those undergoing maintenance dialysis and reported prevalence rates of 18 – 75%. Prevalence of protein-energy wasting (PEW) in CKD patients in Indian studies have been reported about 37-41%. Protein- energy wasting is one of the strongest risk factors for adverse outcomes and death in patients with CKD.

In order to enhance core skills and competencies of health professionals to effectively educate people with renal health, to promote effective self-management for optimal prevention of disease Centre of Nutrition and Dietetics Studies (CNDS), IGMPI has designed this programme. This is undertaken through theoretical knowledge and equip the learners with interpersonal communication skills, this will facilitate psychological wellbeing of patients.

The objective of this course is to enhance your knowledge on all aspects of the nutritional approaches for reducing the risk of renal disease, provide an understanding about nutritional screening and assessment in CKD, methods to improve nutritional status, oral nutritional consideration, need for oral nutritional supplements, enteral feeding, parenteral nutrition and management of other issues in renal diseases.

On completion of this course student will be able to learn how these diseases impact populations worldwide and how they can be prevented. By the end of this course, students will understand the principles underlying the use of nutrition therapy in the prevention and management of renal diseases. You will be able to strengthen renal nutrition knowledge and educate a patient on the role of nutrition support in the prevention and management of CKD.

This course opens new avenues of specialization for allied health professionals and would offer better work opportunities in the field. It will enable an individual to avail of jobs at government, community and private hospitals, community and private clinics, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical companies as a nutrition counsellor for renal health. One can work as a diet counselor and assist doctor in counselling their CKD Patients in any private clinic/hospital.

Module 5: Nutrition Support in End-stage Renal Disease Patients on Hemodialysis and in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients

Module 6: Management of obesity, diabetes and hypertension in CKD

Module 7: Additional Nutritional Considerations in Kidney Disease-Dietary Supplements

Module 8: Nutrition education & counselling in kidney disease

Module 9: Nutritional management of renal transplant

Module 10: Case Studies


Graduation/ B.tech/ B.Sc. in Microbiology/ Life Sciences/ Botany/ Zoology/ Food Science/ Food Technology/ BE/ B.Pharma/ MBBS/ BDS/ BHS/ BUMS/ BAMS or any other discipline. Diploma holders are eligible for our Executive Diploma, Industry Certificate, and Certificate Programmes.

Programme Duration

Minimum time in which a student can complete this diploma course is one year while a maximum of two consecutive years is allowed to complete the course.


All the efforts will be made in the form of 3 months internship to provide industrial exposure to the students pursuing PG Diploma in Regular & Part-time Modes with Food Companies so that they can have good practical knowledge beyond the classroom experience.

This gives huge window of self-regulated and self-paced performance to the participants.

Programme Deliverables

A comprehensive study material for all the modules in hard copies ensuring the needs of the audience. The accompanying training material is appropriately aligned with the current Industry’s expectations.

  • – Assignments for all the programme modules for continuous evaluation and guidance.
  • – Interactive or online live sessions on all key areas of the programme giving all flexibility to the participants.
  • – Online classes for all the modules will be conducted on the weekends. Moreover, a doubt clearing session will also be scheduled before the examination.
  • – All the efforts are made by IGMPI faculty members to make the entire programme modules easily understandable.
  • – Assessment and evaluation for all the programme modules in order to enhance the levels of competencies and skills of the participants leading towards the objective of application in the job.
  • – At the end of each programme modules, the trainers shall obtain feedback from the participants using specially designed questionnaires.
  • – All learning and training delivery initiatives shall be conducted in English.

Examination & Certification

IGMPI follows a credit system based on all learning activities involved in studying for all PG Diploma, Executive Diploma and Certificate Programmes. Each of your modules is equal to 4 credits. To successfully complete the programme, you will have to earn all the credits assigned to your programme.

All the participants are obliged to timely submit completed assessment assignments (during the course, usually after every module) and appear for an online exam at the end of the course. After successful completion, the participants will be awarded Post Graduate Diploma in Renal Nutrition by Centre of Nutrition and Dietetics Studies (CNDS), IGMPI. For all the above-mentioned modules elaborate course material, self- assessment assignments and project work details would be provided by the Institute from time to time.
