New labelling regulations for wheat and maida deferred by 3 months: FSSAI

Updated: May 07, 2019

FSSAI has given a three-month extension till 31 July 2019 to food business operators (FBOs) to label refined wheat flour as maida and wheat flour as atta on food products. The due date to follow this order issued by FSSAI was 30 April 2019. The time period has been extended to comply the order following the industry scenario and representations received from FBOs. The extension helps the state food authorities to make the required arrangements to conduct surveys.

According to director of the western region, FSSAI, P Muthumaran, this new regulation will help the customers to purchase the bakery and biscuit products as per their choice. Currently, wheat flour is written as the name of an ingredient instead the term maida. Maida and wheat flour come under varied standards, according to the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Atta must be written as whole wheat flour and maida as refined wheat flour on the label as per the earlier order issued by FSSAI. As per the new order, Atta will be termed as wheat flour in place of whole wheat flour. Hindi nomenclature maida and atta must be used for refined wheat flour and wheat flour in case of Devanagari script labels.

Checks will be conducted on food products following the deadline completion and strict actions will be taken against the non-compliant parties, as per the assistant commissioner(food), FDA.
