The field of pharmaceutical chemistry arises from the combination of synthetic organic chemistry with pharmacology and medicinal sciences. It encompasses the design, chemical synthesis and development of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), or bio-active molecules. It enables a student to have a detailed knowledge of the chemical aspects of identification, followed by systematic, thorough synthetic alteration of new chemical entities to make them suitable for therapeutic use. It includes synthetic and computational aspects of the study of existing drugs and agents in development in relation to their bioactivities (biological activities and properties), i.e., understanding their structure-activity relationships (SAR). Pharmaceutical chemistry is focused on quality aspects of medicines and aims to assure fitness for purpose of medicinal products.
Pharmaceutical chemists apply their chemistry training to the process of synthesizing new pharmaceuticals. They also improve the processes by which existing pharmaceuticals are made. Pharmaceutical chemists are focused on drug discovery and development and are concerned with the isolation of medicinal agents found in plants, as well as the creation of new synthetic drug compounds. Thus Pharmaceutical chemistry is a versatile and stimulating field as it links many scientific disciplines and allows for collaboration with other scientists in researching and developing new drugs.
The Post Graduate Diploma in Pharmaceutical Chemistry has been structured by experts from the industry themselves and thus comprehensive coverage and understanding of the industry and its functional areas is promised. The goal of the Post Graduate Diploma Programme is to familiarize the participant with the updated theoretical and practical aspects of the Pharmaceutical Chemistry to gain access to this challenging and interesting field.

Any graduation/ B.tech/ B.Sc. in Microbiology/ Life Sciences/ Botany/ Zoology/ Food Science/ Food Technology/ BE/ B.Pharma/ MBBS/ BDS/ BHMS/ BUMS/ BAMS or any other discipline. Diploma holders are eligible for our Executive Diploma, Industry Certificate, and Certificate Programmes.
Minimum duration to complete this programme is 3 months and maximum is 6 months.
The registration dates for this programme run by the Institute are updated timely on the webpage. Effective Online learning tools incorporated into the design of the webpage make the programme lectures, online live classes and study material easily accessible. This gives a huge window of self-regulated and self-paced performance to the participants.
A comprehensive study material for all the modules in hard copies ensuring the needs of the audience. The accompanying training material is appropriately aligned with the current Industry’s expectations.
IGMPI follows a credit system based on all learning activities involved in studying for all PG Diploma, Executive Diploma and Certificate Programmes. Each of your modules is equal to 4 credits. To successfully complete the programme, you will have to earn all the credits assigned to your programme.
All the participants are expected to appear for an online exam and are also obliged to submit assignments after each module. After successful completion, the participants will be awarded Industry Certificate in Pharmaceutical Chemistry by Faculty of Drug Discovery and Development, IGMPI. For all the above mentioned modules elaborate programme material, self-assessment assignments and project work details would be provided by the Institute from time to time. Details get updated on the webpage as well.
The Institute has partnered with many organizations for providing with placement assistance to in its participants. The robust placement cell comprises of senior level Human Resources professionals and Talent Acquisition experts which maintains close links with business and industry. We are engaged in promoting the employability of our participants by maintaining good rapport and relation with HR cell and recruiting managers of leading healthcare companies across the globe.
The efforts of our placement cell also include helping with professional resume writing, interview skills & conducting mock interviews etc.
In recent months the Institute has witnessed more and more participation from professionals working with global pharmaceutical giants like Mankind Pharma Ltd., GSK Ltd, Syngene International, Torrent Pharmaceuticals, Jubilant Life Sciences Ltd, Granules India Ltd., Zuventus Healthcare, Gland Pharma Ltd, Natco Pharma Ltd, Aurobindo Pharma Ltd, GVK Biosciences, , Ipca Laboratories Ltd, Cipla Ltd etc.
Pharmaceutical chemistry offers a wide variety of opportunities in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies. Most chemists use their research skills to formulate, produce, characterize, and analyze new compounds for specific applications. The professionals in the field can also assume regulatory positions like reviewing drug applications at the regulatory bodies.
The pharmaceutical chemists are mainly involved in finding new cures and discovering new molecules through a wide variety of techniques like CADD, high-throughput screening, combinatorial chemistry etc. Many Pharmaceutical chemists start out in the lab and then move on to other laboratory career such as process chemistry, formulation chemistry, quality control or quality assurance. They may also move to nonlaboratory careers such as regulatory affairs, intellectual property (patents), project management, or technology transfer.
