FSSAI norms to restrict reach of unhealthy food to school kids

Updated: June 15, 2019

The country’s apex food regulator, FSSAI, is gearing up to bring protocols in place to regulate and prohibit sale of unhealthy food in school premises and within a 50m radius of the school.

Pawan Kumar Aggarwal, CEO, FSSAI, at an ASSOCHAM event in New Delhi said, “the regulatory body was coming up with draft regulations on healthy diets, safe, wholesome and nutritious food for school children and FSSAI has proposed to control advertisement, promotion and endorsement of unhealthy food products in schools”.

He also added that the FSSAI was working on draft after Delhi High Court ordered them to come out with regulations for unhealthy food in schools three years ago.

The main aim of the regulation is to define a healthy diet and set metrics for the same. The draft also includes a categorization of menus at school canteen based on color coding as green (mostly fresh food), yellow (packaged food) and red (comprising food high in salt, sugar and fat). School health and wellness team should review the same periodically for continuous improvement.

In 2018, FSSAI also put out a draft, namely Food Safety and Standards Regulations.
