FSSAI Safety regulations for Infant nutritional food

Updated: May 27, 2019

A draft regulation “Food Safety Standards (Food for Infant Nutrition) Regulations 2019 is notified by FSSAI for infant nutritional food. It includes standards for infant formula having medicinal purpose, precisely for infants who are born with inborn errors in metabolism (IEM).

IEM is a life-threatening medical condition which affects thousands of infants in India. Children would face physical and cognitive difficulties or even die in the absence of specialized diets.

The draft regulation also contains standards for premature infant lactose-free, hypoallergic infant milk substitutes, sucrose-free infant milk substitutes, and infant food based on traditional food ingredients. Source of permitted ingredients is also specified in the draft regulation. The FSSAI will receive the comments of stakeholders by 14 June 2019 on this draft regulation.

The apex regulator also states that food for special purpose is a separate entity for infant food. However, the basic requirement is the mother’s milk for baby, which is best for their growth and development. The special food products can be given in conditions where breastfeeding is contraindicated due to medical conditions.
