Draft notification to modify Appendix A under food additives: FSSAI

A draft notification has been released by FSSAI to modify Appendix A under heading IV of food additives. It has been named as the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2019. It contains the maximum quantity level of various additives which can be utilized by a food manufacturer, majorly for bakery products. Food additives have been utilized to improvise the appearance, quality and taste of food products.

According to the draft, the recommended maximum level of fatty acid ester of glycerol is 10,000 mg/kg, and Polyglycerol ester of fatty acid is 5,000mg/kg. Along with the maximum quantity levels, the draft also contains certain substitutions for existing additives. This draft is significant as it has been developed to ensure the customer safety. Excessive utilization of additives can result in allergies, digestive disorders, etc.

There would be a requirement to rework on the food products so that they can be in compliance with current standards. Following this draft, consumers will get the quality food products with minimum additives. On the other hand, there will be less development of new products due to restriction of addition of less number of additives.
